Hurricane Ian took roughly half of Naples Pier in September 2022, leaving around 140 feet of it on the bottom of the Gulf and more than thirty pilings collapsed. Reconstruction broke ground in January 2026 on an 18-month programme, which puts reopening at around mid-2027.
Almost every guide to Naples still lists the pier as a headline attraction. Plan around it.
What remains is a town that is better than its own marketing: a genuinely good botanical garden, a serious zoo, one of the calmest stretches of Gulf water in Florida, and the edge of the western Everglades half an hour away.
This is the practical constraint on a Naples day, because free beach parking here is a residency benefit rather than a public amenity.

City meters are enforced every day, year round, with no overnight parking between 11pm and 5am. Collier County and City of Naples residents and property owners get a free beach parking permit, which is why the car park at a busy access point is full of cars that paid nothing.

The strongest single attraction in the town. Around 170 acres of cultivated gardens and restored natural habitat organised by region: Brazilian, Caribbean, Asian and Florida. It is a real botanical institution rather than a municipal park with signs, and it takes two to three hours properly.
Go early. Southwest Florida heat between eleven and three makes an outdoor garden hard work from May onwards.
Built inside a 1919 botanical garden, which gives it mature tropical planting most zoos cannot match. The primate boat tour around the island exhibits is the distinctive part.
The two downtown streets, and they are different. Fifth Avenue is the restaurant and gallery strip with the evening crowd. Third Street South is smaller, older and quieter, with a courtyard structure and the town's Saturday farmers market in season.
Both are expensive. Naples has one of the highest concentrations of wealth in the United States and the restaurant prices reflect it. The food is good; the value is not the point.
Naples Municipal Beach runs south from the pier site, and the sand is soft, pale and gently shelving. The water is calm in a way the Atlantic coast never is, which makes it excellent for small children and unremarkable for anyone wanting waves.
Sunset is the local ritual. With the pier closed, people gather on the sand at the end of the avenues instead.
Forty minutes south, and worth a day. Marco is a developed island with a broad crescent beach; beyond it, the Ten Thousand Islands are mangrove wilderness reachable only by boat. Shelling here is genuinely better than at Naples proper, and the boat tours out of Marco are the practical way to see the mangroves without your own vessel.
Forty-five minutes inland, an Audubon reserve with a boardwalk through old-growth bald cypress. This is where you see the western Everglades without a fanboat, and it is the best wildlife viewing within an hour of the town.

Naples is on the Gulf coast, where blooms of Karenia brevis occur. A bloom means dead fish along the tideline and an airborne irritant that causes coughing and stinging eyes on the beach itself. It comes and goes and it is highly local: one beach can be unusable while another ten miles away is fine.
Both checks are free and take two minutes. The FWC red tide status map shows current concentrations by area, and Mote Marine Laboratory's Beach Conditions Reporting System publishes same-day observations from individual beaches.
Runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking August into September. Naples took a direct and severe hit from Ian in 2022 and the pier is not the only thing still being rebuilt. Travel insurance in that window is a different proposition here than it is in March.
Summer here is genuinely difficult: high nineties with humidity to match, and the mangrove edge produces mosquitoes in numbers that surprise people. Outdoor activity in June through September belongs before ten in the morning.

Book the botanical garden for a morning and the beach for a late afternoon, because that is the order the heat dictates. Budget $4 to $8 a day for parking wherever you go, and do not build an evening around the pier until 2027.
If you have three days, give one of them to Corkscrew Swamp or the Ten Thousand Islands. Naples is a comfortable town, but the reason to come to this corner of Florida is what sits just inland of it.
