By car. About 30 minutes from central Budapest, with paid parking on site. On a hot Saturday the car park fills and the approach road backs up.
The HEV is not covered by every Budapest transport pass out to Budakalasz, since it crosses the city boundary. Check what your pass covers or buy a supplement, because inspectors do check.

Lupa is a day resort with a beach, not a quiet lake. In July and August at the weekend it is crowded, loud and commercial. If you want to swim somewhere peaceful near Budapest, the Danube Bend around Szentendre and Visegrad, or the smaller lakes further out, are the better answer.
Palatinus on Margaret Island is the in-city option: a large outdoor complex of thermal and swimming pools in the middle of the Danube, reachable on foot or tram from the centre and open in summer. Cheaper to get to and easier to fit into a sightseeing day.
The Danube Bend, around Szentendre, Visegrad and Esztergom, has free public river access with variable facilities and is a far better day out if you want scenery rather than a beach club. Szentendre is on the same HEV line 5 you would take to Lupa.
Lake Velence, about an hour south, and Lake Balaton, about two hours south west, are the real Hungarian lake destinations. Balaton is a genuine holiday region rather than a day trip.
